UKIP - I could not believe the recent leaflet which attacks the recent MP expenses debacle. This is a party who one of its MEPs, Ashley Mote was jailed for benefit fraud.

Its Leader, Nigel Farage, MEP, has just boasted that his expenses total £2million.

Delivering - Whilst, delivering a couple of days ago, a garden gnome belched when I walked past it!!

The Labour leaflet attacks DCC regarding Rushbrook, can I remind them that when the decision was made the County Council was run by a coalition of Lib Dems, Conservatives, Labour and Independents. Only 1 Independent voted against the proposal.

On Sunday, the editorial in the Observer advised voters to vote Lib Dem.

On Wednesday (3rd) a letter in the Totnes Times suggest ignoring  my call not to vote Green or Labour because it might let the Tories in. The writer says my majority is so large it is safe to do so. The last election took place at the same time as the General Election, with a large turnout. This time, I expect the turnout to halve, so my call is meaningful.

I was privileged to see “Showstoppers” at the Totnes Civic Hall last night (23/05/09), performed by TAODS. It was a really professional performance and really enjoyable.

I know it is invidious to select favourites because they were all so good. But I loved “No matter what” performed by the Totnes equivalent of “Boyzone” (?) Bras were thrown on the stage, I had to prevent by wife throwing hers! I also loved Dancing Queen (Mama Mia), and Cell Block Tango (Chicago) who as well as singing brilliantly, were very sexy (am I allowed to say that).

It was an incredible evening. Please go an see this excellent Totnes group, they are on stage again, in the Panto “Robinson Crusoe” in January(/) 2010.

I listen to a fascinating “Desert Island Discs” on Radio 4, last week. The subject was Vince Cable, the Lib Dem’s shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. I found I had something in common with him. Ballroom Dancing, I believe that he holds an international award, unfortunately, I am bronze medal (failed).

Council Tax & Totnes Town Council

January 25th, 2009 by Geoff Date
Comment?

At the recent precept meeting of Totnes Town Council, it was a proposal by Cllr Geoff Date that reduced the Council Tax increase to 2.7%. The Town Council normally uses 50% of the income of the Paige Adams Charity (which it controls) to give grants or reduce the council tax. This year the council was in a miserly mood when in gave out grants, so there was still approx. £2500 not used. Cllr Geoff Date proposed that the money be used to reduce the council tax in this recessionary climate. The Council agreed.

BOUNDARY COMMISSION

Following the publication of the Boundary Commissions first thoughts, Cllr

Geoff Date stated “ I support the Boundary Commission’s main recommendation for a Unitary Devon. My reasons for this are that I would hate to see the Education Service, Social Services and Highways split into 4 unitarys, with 4 Chief Executives, 4 Directors of Education, etc. Also I like the idea of 29? Neighbourhood Boards, with Budgets of around £200,000. These boards would include parish councillors.

The new unitary authority would mean a reduction in Council Tax. Just think about it, the savings that would be made. As all the Districts would go we would save on 8 Chief Executives and their PA, etc., 8 Treasurers, 8 Chief Planning Officers, etc. and of course, the allowances of approx. 300 district councillors.
